Can I put artificial flowers in a fish tank? ›

If they are silk or linen flowers, the fish will pick at them until they're in shreds. If they are flowers for arrangements, they usually have a metal wire running through the stem (so you can pose them) which will rust when exposed to water, so you definitely don't want those!

Artificial flowers are devoid of the pollen and fragrances that are common culprits of allergic reactions. These flowers are made from materials such as silk, polyester, or plastic, which do not release airborne allergens.

From the selection of premium silk materials to the meticulous design process, it's not just about filling space. It's about bringing a piece of the outdoors in, without the maintenance, the pests, or the germs. And honestly, for many, that's priceless.

While live plants are a great choice, they can be difficult to maintain for beginner aquarium hobbyists. Artificial plants, on the other hand, offer a low-maintenance alternative.

So long as plastic plants are built for aquarium use, they should be safe for fish.

Artificial plants don't last forever.

Many people think artificial plants never need to be replaced, but this couldn't be further from the truth. Fake plants are prone to deterioration and fading—especially if they're constantly exposed to light.

Plants Change Slowly Just Like Us

Living plants can be plucked from the soil, rooted in water and potted many times over, whereas artificial plants are expensive and cannot give back. They stand in their pots forever, unblinking and unfeeling—until they eventually get thrown in the garbage.

If you're going for a natural look in your home, artificial plants may not be the best choice. They can also be quite expensive, depending on the type of plant you choose. Fake plants also require regular dusting and cleaning, as they can accumulate dust and dirt over time.

Low-quality fake plants will look tacky. Cheap fake indoor plants will obviously look tacky since they are designed using low-quality materials. These are not carefully crafted plants, meaning that their quality gets compromised fast.

No risk of pests. No matter how you slice it, there are zero upsides to plant pests, especially when it comes to potted pieces that live in your home. Faux plants attract nothing but joy and eliminate any potential need to use insecticidal sprays.

Real plants do often provide filtration when it comes to the air that we breathe and artificial plants won't do that. However, research has found that in terms of wellbeing benefits such as improving mood and morale, as well as productivity and focus, artificial plants really work.

In general, plants are safe for many fish, bettas included. Both live and fake plants can provide enrichment to your betta's environment, giving them places to explore, hang out and hide in.

The best way to do it without using any chemicals is to soak them in hot water for a while until the water cools down. You can then use a toothbrush to clean them under running water depending on the amount of grime they hold. It is best to rinse the artificial plants & other aquarium decor under running water.

The tank should be prepared and cycled in advance in order to achieve the best results with your outside plants. Lighting is particularly important, as these plants have been growing outside where the lighting is naturally obtained from the sun. Don't scrimp on plant care just because this is a quarantine tank.

As my fish have got bigger, and the number of species that can stand up to them has declined, I've found it can be helpful to mix fake plants in with the real ones. The fake ones soon get a slight covering of algae which the fish will also nibble at and can help 'take the heat off' the real plants.
